Ants are social insects and they are also related to wasps and bees. There are more than 20000 Species of ants in the world.
They can be identified by their antennae; Ants form colonies that can range in size from a few dozen to thousands. Ants are organised in these colonies with worker ants and soldier ants who all work together to form a very successful entity working for the Queen and to support their colony. Ants have colonised almost every land mass in the world and can adapt very quickly to varying climates and conditions. They have the ability to quickly tap into resources and to defend themselves against any predators.
Their ability to exploit resources brings ants into conflict with humans, as they can damage crops and invade buildings.
One of the most common species in the UK is the Common Black Ant or Garden Ant. They are not normally disease carriers but can become a nuisance when they enter properties searching for different types of food.
Other ants found in the UK include the Pharoah Ant, the Ghost Ant and the Argentinian Ant amongst others although these are normally only found in heated buildings. Red ants (Myrmica rubra) are also common in the UK and can sting, however this should be less severe than a wasp sting in most people.
The nests can be eradicated using a variety of professional products including sprays and poison gels which can be taken back to the nest and consumed by the queen.
